„Can we ask for forgiveness“

In the summer of 1975 in Southern France, a deep friendship blossomed between EL MORA and the New York couple, the Brodheims, who, despite their English, clearly tried to conceal their German mother tongue.

The relationship deepened, and EL MORA became like a son to the Brodheims. However, this changed dramatically when an innocent comment about National Socialism deeply hurt Mr. Brodheim. Eventually, he revealed that he and his wife had survived the concentration camp.

The intense confrontation with Germany’s past, which began from that moment on, eventually led to the creation of these ink drawings. “Can we ask for forgiveness” is a cry for forgiveness that sensitively evokes the suffering of the Weiss family at the Buchenwald concentration camp. With a series consisting of 10 images, EL MORA brings the suffering of the Weiss family to life in every detail.

Despite repeated attempts to destroy these works to rid himself of their burdensome meaning, EL MORA still preserved them.

With the clear goal of raising awareness that the horrors of the past can return at any time if we are not vigilant, he chose not to sell the series of 10 images but to donate them to a Holocaust Center.
